NUTRITION OR EXERCISE: Which Is More Important as We Age?

As we grow older nutrition and physical activity plays a significant role in how we function as we age. My mother’s appetite became erratic as she grew older but significantly diminished toward the end of her life. Mostly, due to medication, cancer, and diminished movement.

I know for myself that physically I do not move around enough. I am beginning to see the results of a sedentary lifestyle. Although I have not gained a lot of weight, I am losing muscle tone and flexibility. I know I need to exercise but it is not something I look forward to doing.

So which is more important – nutrition or exercise?

The truth is, they work together. You cannot out-exercise a bad diet, and you cannot get strong without moving your body. As we age, both become critical.

Nutrition tips for seniors:

  • Focus on protein to maintain muscle mass
  • Stay hydrated (thirst diminishes with age)
  • Eat colorful fruits and vegetables for antioxidants
  • Watch portion sizes as metabolism slows

Exercise tips for seniors:

  • Walking is excellent low-impact exercise
  • Stretching maintains flexibility
  • Light weight training preserves bone density
  • Balance exercises prevent falls

The key is to start small. Even five minutes of movement a day is better than none. And small changes in diet add up over time.

My mother’s appetite struggles taught me that nutrition cannot be ignored. And my own stiffness tells me that movement is non-negotiable. We need both.

What is one small change you can make today?
