Don’t Put Off Tomorrow What You Can Do Today

MY WINDOW INTO TIME

Today, I am sitting in my favorite chair in an upstairs room we call “the loft.” I am looking out the north window viewing the Oak trees and Mother Nature’s creativity.

The stand of oak trees is my window to the passing seasons and indicator of the passing time. Once again, I witnessed the buds bursting forth, the leaves opening to their full capacity. Then I watched the cycle of color from green to yellow, gold, brown, and orange.

Now the trees are barren, but I see the buds already forming for next spring. Mother Nature has a plan. She knows exactly what she is doing.

This window has taught me something important.

We spend so much time planning for tomorrow that we forget to live today. We say “I’ll call that friend tomorrow” or “I’ll start that project next week” or “I’ll tell them I love them when the time is right.”

But the oak trees do not wait. They burst forth when it is time. They change color when it is time. They rest when it is time. And they prepare for the next season without hesitation.

Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today.

If you have been meaning to call someone – call them today.
If you have been meaning to say I love you – say it today.
If you have been meaning to start that project – start today.
If you have been meaning to visit a loved one – visit today.

Because tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

My mother’s passing taught me this lesson deeply. There were things I wished I had said, moments I wished I had cherished more fully. Do not wait until it is too late.

Look at your own window. What season are you in? What buds are forming? What colors are changing?

Do not wait. Act today.
